Conducting effective investigations – getting it right from the start

Seminar Brief

Investigations are the bedrock of formal disciplinary, capability, and absence processes — and getting them right is essential. A flawed or rushed investigation can undermine even the most clear-cut case, while a well-run one gives confidence, clarity, and protection for all involved.

This practical session will take you through the key stages of an effective investigation — from initial planning and fact-finding, to conducting professional interviews, gathering reliable evidence, and writing a clear, robust investigation report. Whether you’re new to investigations or looking to refresh your approach, this session will equip you with the tools to handle even the most sensitive cases with confidence.

In this session, we’ll cover

  • What makes a fair and lawful investigation

  • How to plan and scope your investigation properly from the outset

  • Do’s and don’ts when interviewing staff and witnesses

  • Gathering, storing and presenting evidence appropriately

  • Structuring and writing investigation reports that stand up to scrutiny

This session is for

Anyone involved in HR, people management or safeguarding processes in schools or trusts — particularly those responsible for disciplinary, performance, grievance or sickness absence cases.
