Lockdown Readiness: Strengthening School Security Without Spreading Fear

A practical workshop on refining procedures, testing decisions, and building staff readiness

Seminar brief

With the UK’s terrorism threat level currently rated as “substantial”—meaning an attack is considered likely—and recent reports of spikes in disruptive incidents and rising concern over school safety, it’s more important than ever for school business leaders to ensure their security procedures are proportionate, clear, and effective  .

Led by security consultant Shane (formerly a police super intendant), this session offers pragmatic guidance for reviewing and strengthening your school’s lockdown and security protocols. We’ll walk through step-by-step planning, realistic drills, and how to support staff without creating unnecessary anxiety — so you’re prepared, not alarmed.

In this session we explore

• What modern, proportionate lockdown plan elements look like — from door access to communications

• How to conduct scenario-based drills that improve readiness — without disrupting learners

• How to use risk assessment tools to spot vulnerabilities around your school’s environment

• Crafting staff guidance and messaging that balances urgency with calm

• How to collaborate with the police and local partners to refine procedures and share best practice

Take‑home points

  • A step-by-step checklist for reviewing and updating your lockdown policy

  • A method for running effective, low-impact lockdown drills

  • Clear guidance on communicating expectations and building staff confidence

  • Actions for strengthening your security partnerships with police and peers

This session is for school business leaders who

Want to ensure their school is protected without pandering to fear — and understand what a robust, sensible and tested approach to security looks like today.

Shane Williams
About the speaker

Shane spent 20 years in the police, during which time he was focused on helping young people and steering them away from the criminal justice system, eventually becoming head of training for Greater Manchester Police. During his latter years with the force, he questioned himself, wondering if policing was the right way to help as many young people as possible. Believing he could do more outside the force, Shane took the leap and founded Global Policing. Global Policing works with schools and organisations to help keep children safe and to help them make better-informed choices.
